Autoimmune diseases are a diverse group of over a hundred conditions in which the immune system attacks the body’s healthy tissues and organs. The most common autoimmune diseases worldwide are lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes, Crohn’s disease, psoriasis, and scleroderma. While these diseases impact both genders, in the United States, women account for 78 percent of newly diagnosed cases of autoimmune diseases.
